The 2017 NHL playoffs will kick off three days after the 2016-17 NHL regular season concludes and will feature a total of 16 teams. There will be a total of eight teams from both the Eastern and Western Conferences who earn spots in the postseason. Each conference champion will face off against each other in the 2017 Stanley Cup Finals in a best of seven game matchup. The first team to win four games will be crowned as the overall 2017 NHL Champion.

How Does the 2017 NHL Playoff Qualifying and Seeding Work?

Starting in 2014, the NHL revamped the playoff seeding and methodology. For the 2017 NHL playoffs, the top three teams from each division will automatically qualifying for the postseason and will earn a seed between 1 and 3 based on their overall record. The team with the best overall record in each conference will earn the overall conference #1 seed. For the remaining spots in the playoffs, the wild card teams will be selected from those with the overall best records not already qualified for the tournament. The wild card team with the worse record in each conference will play the overall #1 seed, and the team with the better record will play the #1 seed with the worse record. This is the only case where a team from one division can play teams in the other division early in the playoffs. Unlike before 2014, the NHL no longer reseeds teams as was done in the past (and is still done in the NFL Playoffs).
