The National Hockey League (NHL) pits 30 teams who play against each other throughout the regular season in North America with the goal of earning a playoff spot and the overall championship of the league known as the Stanley Cup. Of the 30 teams, 23 are based in the United States, and a total of seven in Canada. The NHL is based out of New York City and is considered to be the premiere professional hockey league in the world. The NHL has been in existence since November 26th, 1917, and was preceded by the NHA (National Hockey Association) that was originally formed in 1909. The first expansion into the United States for teams occurred in 1924 when the Boston Bruins joined the league, and there are players from more than 20 different countries who are on the active rosters of teams now with Canadian-born players comprising the majority of players in the league.
