So, the Warren Buffet and Quicken Loans sponsored Billion Dollar Bracket Challenge is officially over. The top 20 brackets who meet all of the Bracket Challenge rules will win a $100,000 a piece! Although I didn’t win a cool 100K, I did do pretty decent, 4881 out of 15 million+ getting 47 of 63 picks correct! Now if only Kentucky had won the championship game and a little luck, I might have been close enough to winning the contest to curse at Yahoo!!
Bracketology Thought Process
I always find it a little tough to put together my bracket every year. I’ll lay out how I put together my 2014 March Madness entry for you here:
Step 1 – Since we haven’t seen a 16 seed win ever, I went with the odds and picked all of the #1 seeds to win their first games.
Step 2 – I went against the odds for the 2014 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and did not pick a #1 seed to win the tourney. This has been a good rule of thumb the past several years; however, I was not super impressed by any of the one seeds for this year’s edition of March Madness, so didn’t go with any of them.
Step 3 – I decided to ignore the 15 seed upsetting a 2 seed rule this year.
Step 4 – Picking at least one 12 seed to win! This year, I picked SF Austin and Harvard to win but incorrectly chose NC State to beat St. Louis and failed to pick North Dakota State upsetting Oklahoma!
Step 5 – I always pick at least one 2 seed to not make the Sweet 16. This year, I successfully predicted the UCONN upset of Villanova; however, did not pick the Stanford upset of Kansas!
Step 6 – I never pick a 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, or 16 seed to make the Final Four. Nothing changed this year, and these seeds have still failed to make the Final Four since the NCAA adopted the current tournament format.
Step 7 – I tried to avoid teams that were struggling in their past 5-6 games of the regular season and conference post season in my picks this year.
Step 8 – I emphasized picking teams that performed in their final 3-4 games. This lead me to pick Kentucky to get to the championship game. I thought Florida would make it there as well, but I don’t think anyone could predict that the Gators would have their worst game of the season in the Final Four!
Anyway, here are my picks for the 2014 Billion Dollar Bracket Challenge. Please feel free to share yours in the comments section of the article!
