How is the NCAA Tournament Field Picked?

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Selection Committee will choose the final field of 68 teams for the tournament. All of the 32 conference tournament champions receive an automatic bid to the tournament. For the first time, the Ivy League will host a tournament to crown their champion for the 2017 edition of March Madness to determine their automatic bid. The league will have a four-team tournament that will consist of the top four teams from regular season play that will compete in Philly on March 11th and 12th for the automatic bid. The remaining teams in March Madness compete for at-large bids from the Selection Committee. The four lowest-seeded automatic qualifying teams and four lowest-seed at-large teams will be assigned to the First Four with the winners of those games advancing to the first round of play. A common pastime of basketball fans is to follow ESPN’s Joe Lunardi and other experts bracketology throughout the year to try and estimate where one’s favorite team sits with regards to making the tourney and their respective seeding.
