2016 MLB Playoff Schedule

The 2016 MLB Playoff schedule will be here before you know it. The playoffs will kick off on Tuesday, October 4th, 2016 with the Wild Card game for the American League. The divisional series will kick off on October 7th, and they will consist of a best of five matchup between the remaining four teams in both the American and National leagues. The winners of each of these series will play in their respective league championships, and the final teams remaining in each league will face off in the 2016 MLB World Series. The tentative start date for the 2016 MLB World Series is Tuesday, October 25th, 2016. As the final matchups, schedules, and TV schedules are set, we will post the updated information for baseball fans to enjoy. MLB Postseason Schedule
Updates: The Chicago Cubs have clinched the division title and have NLDS home field advantage.

The LA Dodgers have clinched the NL West Division Championship, and the Washington Nationals have clinched the NL East Championship. The seeding (and home field advantage) between the two teams remains TBD based on how the remainder of the MLB regular season proceeds.

9/28 Updates: Boston has clinched a playoff berth.
Texas and Cleveland have now clinched division titles.

10/2 Updates (Before the final games are played):TEX clinched division title and home field through World Series.
CHC clinched division title and home field through NL playoffs.
BOS, CLE, WSH, LAD clinched division titles.
BOS holds tiebreaker over CLE if both teams finish tied for No. 2 seed in AL.
WSH clinched home-field advantage for NLDS matchup with LAD.
NYM clinched first NL Wild Card, will host Wild Card Game on Wednesday.

How Many MLB Teams Earn a Spot in the Playoffs?

A total of 10 of the 30 Major League Baseball teams earn a spot in the playoffs. The three divisional champions earn spots in each League, and the two Wildcard teams (one from each league) earn playoff spots. The Wildcard Round of the MLB Playoffs consists of a single elimination game for both the American and National League games.

What is the Format of the 2016 MLB Playoffs?

The Wildcard round of the MLB playoffs is a single elimination game. The first round of the Divisional Series is a best three of out of five contest played in the following order: HHAAH, and the higher seeded of the two teams gets home field advantage. The championship game for each League is a best four of seven contest played in the following order: HHAAAHH. The World Series is also a best four of seven contest played in the following order: HHAAAHH. The final MLB Playoff schedule will be finalized no later than the last day of the 2016 MLB regular season.
